WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There’s a lot of talk about building a new baseball stadium in Wilmington by 2014. One that already exists in the Port City will host a big event that same year.
Following a two-year hiatus, the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championships will return to UNCW’s Brooks Field for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The postseason tournament was held in Wilmington from 2004-2011 before moving to Harrisonburg, VA, in 2012 and 2013 at James Madison’s Veterans Memorial Park.
“We’re excited about the CAA Baseball Championship returning to Wilmington for 2014 and 2015,” CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said in a statement. “Their tremendous facilities, the significant local interest and the region’s amenities make this an ideal tournament site for our teams and fans.”
Brooks Field has hosted the event 11 times, including 1989, 1990 and 1993, along with the eight-year run from 2004-11.
Supporters of Wilmington’s plan to build a minor league baseball stadium have pointed to events like collegiate conference tournaments as possibilities to help use the stadium when the minor league team is not playing.
